Overview
The Optometrist will provide comprehensive vision and ocular health care for UHC patients. They will examine UHC patients’ eyes to diagnose ocular disorders and diseases. As part of the comprehensive eye exam for glasses the optometrist will check patient acuities, refractive error, binocular vision, peripheral vision and ocular health. Contact lens exams will include a topographical study, corneal health study and contact lens fitting. An ocular health assessment will include proper testing as is required based on diagnosis. For example, glaucoma patients need full visual field perimetry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, tonometry and optic nerve interpretation. The optometrist is responsible for interpreting results for the different types of exams and providing patient plans. They administer drugs to patients to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems and prescribe drugs to treat some eye diseases. As part of the optometrist job duties they will diagnose conditions caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, referring patients to other health care practitioners as needed. This position is an exempt position and reports to the Optometry Director.
